Thanks to the authorities!

I am so happy to see the news yesterday that the Tamil Nadu Government has decided to operate special buses for the school children. Two months ago I read the sad news of a 16 year old boy called Bharathkumar who slipped and fell off from the overcrowded bus near Tambaram, Chennai. He succumbed to head injuries. It hurts a lot when such things happen and his case is not an isolated one. Statistics says that over three lakh children in the city take Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus to school every day with many of them travelling more than 8 km to school.

Bharathkumar’s mother would have told him to take a less crowded bus everyday but unfortunately the less crowded bus never came. I was very annoyed with the fact this happens very frequently in Chennai and authorities have not taken any steps towards putting an end to such disastrous things. With ladies special buses being operated across the city, a special bus for the students would do a world of good to many school going boys and girls who struggle a lot with huge school bags.

It might be adventurous to say that it’s a great thing to experience the footboard travel and to fight for a leg space. You might be calling me a sick old man who prefers to stay away from adventures but I am not worried about it.

With woefully inadequate bus services we are killing the school going children. I have also seen the obnoxious and irritating behaviour of few bus conductors and drivers towards school going girl children. The high class brats who have studied in international schools and village folks who studied in schools in their home’s backyard like me can’t feel or understand their trouble.

There’s no point in arguing about changing the staggering school timings. Increasing the number of buses and introducing more special buses for school going children is the need of the hour and am really glad to see an announcement of our state government recently to operate more special buses in the routes with clusters of schools.

As a common man and a citizen of this country/state I am so thankful to the authorities who have brought a ray of hope to the children who are forced to travel in footboard. Life is too precious and it’s the duty of the Government to provide a conducive and safe environment for the students to focus on their studies. I have not seen Bharathkumar or his parents. But everyone can feel their pain and grief. We can’t do anything to make his parents smile but we can put an end to such things. No more Bharthkumars.

Practicing SEO – beginner to beginner!

Recently I designed a static website. The website offers no functional features but provides plenty of information to its target viewers. The client wanted the site to be listed in Google’s search results while searching with a specific keyword. I was reading blogs and online tutorials about SEO so as to improve my search ranking. As both Google and Bing refused to list that site even after several months since the site is hosted, as was working vigorously to do something towards improving the ranking. Now i am quiet happy with search results. All the blogs, books and experts revealed two major facts: (1) SEO has to do very little with technology (2) Content and its description too are the kings.

Though it is evident that the search giants like Google, Bing and yahoo ranks the site on the basis of topic, quality, reliability and many other factors, we can still do some magic with the meta tags. We can’t improve the ranking of the site just with meta tags, but are really simple tools to improve your standings in search engines.

Here I have listed few of the most important aspects of SEO.

1. Keywords in Meta tag – specify the keywords that describe the site and its services better. If you are running a matrimonial services website than say brides, bridegrooms, profiles, photos, horoscopes, US(!), matrimonial, Chennai, sub sect no bar, etc.

2. Descriptions – Precisely describe the contents of that page – make sure you write the right thing.

3. Links – Let they are appropriate and useful. Raise the following question several times to yourself: “Does this link help my target customer find what they are looking for?”. Don’t add that link until you are really convinced that it is necessary.

4. The contents - The best advice is to make the information on your website useful, descriptive, honest, and compelling to your customers. In one word I can say KISS (Keep it simple, stupid).

Usability Engineering – You are not your user!

Recently I read several interesting articles on usability engineering. I was wondering how haplessly I have coded and I am coding few web applications when it comes to usability/user engineering. I need to often remind myself that “I am not my user”.

I have built a few apps so far. During the design/development process, I am constantly worried about adding more functional features to it (according to the requirements of the clients!) rather than envisioning a sound usability model. At times I forget the fact that client is not the user and the intended user may not be happy with the features my client is very happy about.

Usability aspects have always been an afterthought to many app builders and I am no exception to this. I know my product inside out. Right from the inception stage I watch and control the growth of the application. In my application, I use every single form, visit every single link and work with all its functional parts. Since I can see the application grow and prosper through its entire life cycle, my wishes are imprinted or forced upon the it unknowingly.

This blind phenomenon results in poor usability. We tend to thrust the user with functionalities he never asked for. A specific feature that I think is very essential to my app might irritate its user.

The most important thing is to understand the users and their needs. In the urge to fulfill the requirements of the clients and stakeholders, we ignore the usability aspects of a product. You’re not your user. Remember it. Improve the usability!

குறும்படங்கள்

நிறைய எழுத வேண்டும் என்று எண்ணுகிற போதிலும் வெகு குறைவாகவே எழுத முடிகிறது. நண்பர் ஷாலோம் விஜய் இடுகைகள் குறைந்து விட்டனவே என்று ஒரு மின்னஞ்சல் அனுப்பி இருந்தார். பெரும்பாலும் தமிழ்இடுகைகள் நிறைய எழுதவே விரும்புகிறேன். தொழில்நுட்பம் குறித்த தகவல்கள் தவிர வேறு எதையும் ஆங்கிலத்தில் எழுதுவதில்லை. கலைச்சொற்கள் தெரியாமல் தடுமாறுவதே அதற்கு மூல காரணம். Blog என்பதற்கு மனஉரை என்கிற புதிய சொல்லை செம்மொழி மாநாட்டு அதிகாரபூர்வ இணையதளத்தில் கண்டேன். மனம் உரைப்பதை எல்லாம் உளறுவதால் மனஉரை என்று பெயரிட்டார்களா என்று தெரியவில்லை. காரணம் எதாகிலும் சொல் நன்றாக இருக்கிறது.

புதிய இடுகைகளாக நான் பார்த்து ரசித்த குறும்படங்கள் குறித்து பகிரலாம் என்று விரும்புகிறேன். குறும்படங்கள் குறித்து பரவலாக இருக்கிற கருத்துகள் பல உடைத்தெறியப்பட வேண்டியவை. பெரும்பாலான குறும்பட முயற்சிகள் வெறும் வணிக நோக்கத்தில் மேற்கொள்ளப்படுவதல்ல என்றபோதும் பல திறன் மிகுந்த பெரிய, சிறிய இயக்குநர்களின் பங்களிப்பு குறும்படங்களுக்கு உள்ளது. தற்போது பல்வேறு படைப்பாளிகள் குறும்படங்களை எடுத்து அவற்றை வெளியிட்டு பரவலான பார்வையாளர்களைப் பெற யுட்யூப் (YouTube) போன்ற இணையதளங்கள் உதவுகின்றன.நான் பார்த்த ஒரு குறும்படத்தின் உரலியை (URL) இந்த இடுகையில் தந்துள்ளேன்.

முதல் உறலி ஒரு தந்தைக்கும் மகனுக்குமான உறவைச் சொல்லும் படம். குழந்தைகள் எப்போதும் தகப்பனின் அன்பில் திளைக்கிறார்கள். தான் வளர வளர தந்தைக்கும் வயதாகிவிடுகிறது என்பதை எந்த மகனும் அறியத் துவங்குவதில்லை. தந்தையின் கை விரல்களைப் பற்றியபடியே தான் நாம் வெளி உலகைக் காண்கிறோம். கொஞ்சம் வளர்ந்த பிறகு, விரல்கள் அவசியமற்றுப் போகின்றன. தந்தைக்கும் மகனுக்குமான உறவு படகிற்கும் மரத்தச்சனுக்கும் உள்ள உறவைப் போன்றது. அந்த படகை செய்தவர் மரத்தச்சன் தான் என்றாலும் அவர் அதை ரொம்பநாள் வைத்திருந்து உரிமை கொண்டாட முடியாது. நீரில் விட்டுத்தான் ஆக வேண்டும். அது நன்றாக பயணித்தால் கரையில் நின்று மகிழலாம். கவிழ்ந்தால் அதே கரையில் நின்று கண்ணீர் வடிக்கத்தான் முடியும் - என்கிற எஸ். ராமகிரிஷ்ணனின் வரிகளை இப்படம் நினைவூட்டுகிறது. ஒரு முதிய தந்தைக்கு தேவை அக்கறையும் அன்பும் மட்டுமே. மன்னிப்பு, நன்றி மற்றும் அன்பு இவை மூன்றும்தான் மனிதனின் மகத்தான கண்டுபிடிப்புகள்.

இக்குறும்படம் பற்றி நிறைய சொல்வதற்கில்லை. சிறிய குறும்படம், மூன்றே கதாபாத்திரங்கள், ஒரே இடம். ஆனால் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் நினைவில் இருக்க கூடிய கருத்தும் காட்சியமைப்பும். படத்தின் தரமும் உள்ளடக்கமும் கவித்துவ நுட்பமும் பன்மடங்கு உயர்வாக இருக்கிறது. நான் யு ட்யூப்-இல் செலவிட்டதிலேயே உபயோகமான நேரம் என்று ஒன்று உண்டென்றால் அது இக்குறும்படம் பார்த்த நேரம் தான் - என்கிற யாரோ ஒருவருடைய பின்னூட்டமே இப்படத்தின் தரத்துக்கு ஓர் நற்சான்று. மழை விட்டு வெகு நேரம் ஆனபின்னும் மரத்து இலைகளில் இருந்து சொட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்கிற நீர் போல படம் முடிந்தபின்னரும் காட்சிகள் ஒன்றன்பின் ஒன்றாக மனதில் இருந்து கசியத் துவங்குகின்றன.
