காய்ச்சலும் கவலையும்...

இந்த மழை சிலருக்கு கவிதைகளையும் சிலருக்கு காய்ச்சலையும், எனக்கு இரண்டையும் தந்திருக்கிறது. உடல் நலக்குறைவு காரணமாக வீட்டிலேயே இருந்தேன். மருந்துகள், தூக்கம், சோர்வு என்று நேரம் கடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. என் தந்தை பயன்படுத்திய சாய்வு நாற்காலியில் பெரும்பாலும் படுத்துக்கிடந்தேன். நோய் கண்டவனின் பகல் பொழுதுகள் சஹாராவை விட நீளமாக இருக்கின்றன. காய்ச்சல் காரணமாக சிறுவயதில் ராணி காமிக்ஸ் புத்தகத்தில் படித்த கதை மாந்தர்களெல்லாம் இரவில் கனவில் வந்து இம்சை செய்தனர். இரவும் அல்லா பகலும் அல்லா ஒரு ஹிரண்யநேரத்தில் மருத்துவமனைக்கு சென்று வந்ததைப் பற்றி யோசித்தவண்ணம் இருந்தேன்.

பள்ளி நாட்களில் இருந்து இன்று வரை பலமுறை மருத்துவமனைக்கு சென்றிருக்கிறேன்.ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் அது தனித்த அனுபவமாகவே இருக்கிறது. சிறுவயதில் இருந்து பார்த்த அதே டாக்டர் சிரித்த முகத்துடன் அமர்ந்திருந்தார். காத்திருந்த நேரத்தில் சுற்றி இருந்த அனைவரையும் உற்று நோக்கியவண்ணமிருந்தேன். அற்புதமான முக வாசிப்புகள் ரயில் நிலையங்களிலும் மருத்துவமனைகளிலும் தான் சாத்தியமாகின்றது. மருத்துவமனைகள் வயது வித்தியாசமின்றி எல்லோரையும் குழந்தைகள் போல் மாற்றிவிடுகின்றன. எல்லோருக்கும் உடல் நிலை சரியில்லாத போது சாய்ந்துகொள்ள ஒரு தோளும், ஆறுதலுக்கு ஒரு சொல்லும் தேவைப்படுகின்றது. எல்லா மருத்துவமனைகளிலும் இருக்கும் குழந்தை படம், அமைதியாயிருக்கும் படி சொன்னது.

சிறு வயதில் சேற்றில் கிரிக்கெட் விளையாடி, கை கால்கள் எல்லாம் புண்கள் வந்து அவஸ்தைப்பட்டேன். இப்பொது இருக்கும் டாக்டர், அவரது தந்தை (அவரும் டாக்டர்) , மற்றும் என் தந்தை எல்லோரும் சேர்ந்து மயக்கமருந்து இன்றி எனக்கு ஒரு அறுவை சிகிச்சைக்கு நிகரான ஒரு நிவாரணம் செய்து அலறவைத்தனர். சிறுவயதில் அந்த அறைக்குள் செல்ல மறுத்து அடம் பிடித்தது நினைவுக்கு வந்து, என்னை நானே மவுனமாக பகடி செய்து கொண்டிருந்தேன்.

அப்போது ஒரு சிறுவனை அங்கே அவன் தந்தை அழைத்து வந்தார். அவன் ஊசி போட வேண்டாம் என்று எதற்கோ பலமாக அழத்துவங்கினான். அவன் தந்தை அவனை சமாதானப்படுத்தி விட்டு புதிய ஊசி வாங்க மருந்தகம் சென்றார். அவன் மெல்ல என் அருகில் வந்து ஊசி வேண்டாம் என்று சொல்லுங்கள் அண்ணா என்றான். சரி என்று ஆமோதித்தேன். உடனே என் கையை இறுக்கிப் பிடித்தபடி, அவன் உட்கார்ந்து கொண்டான். நடுங்கிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் அவன் கைகளின் வெம்மை என் கைகளுக்குள் பரவ ஆரம்பித்தது. எனக்கும் அவனுக்கும் வயது குறைந்துகொண்டிருந்தது. பேச்சற்ற மௌனத்தில் இருவரும் அமர்ந்திருந்தோம். சொற்கள் ஏதும் அற்ற ஒரு தவிப்பை அவன் உணர்ந்திருந்தான். அவன் தந்தை வந்து மறுபடியும் அழைக்கலானார். அவன் ஊசி வேண்டாம்பா என்று மறுபடியும் அழ ஆரம்பித்தான். வயது வேறுபாடின்றி, மருத்துவமனைகள் எல்லோரையும் எதோ பயம் கொள்ளச் செய்கின்றன. ஏன் அங்கே காத்திருப்பது ஒரு சுவாரசியமான அனுபவமாக எவருக்கும் இருப்பதில்லை என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தேன். என் தவிப்பு எனக்கே விசித்திரமாகவும் நகைப்புக்குரியதாயும் இருந்தது. நான் எதையோ நினைத்து சிரிக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். அருகில் இருந்த ஒருவன் எனக்கு காய்ச்சல் முற்றிவிட்டிருக்குமோ என்று பயந்து சற்று தள்ளி உட்கார்ந்தான். நான் மீண்டும் சிரிக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன்.

ஜிமெயில் ஜாக்கிரதை!

நாளுக்கு நாள் நம் ஜிமெயில் பயன்பாடு அதிகரித்துவருவது குறித்து யோசித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தேன். 2004 -லில் துவங்கப்பட்ட இச்சேவை, ஆரம்பத்தில் அழைப்புகள் (invitations) மூலமாகவே, பயனர்களை (users) சேர்த்துக்கொண்டு வந்தது. 2007 -இல் இருந்து திருவாளர் பொதுஜனம் பயன்படுத்தக் கூடிய வகையில் மாறியது. தொழில் நுட்பப் பூங்காவின் முன்னாள் இயக்குனர் மறைந்த ரா. ந. பாலசுப்ரமணியன் அவர்கள் கொடுத்த அழைப்பு மூலமே, நான் ஜிமெயில் சேவையைப் பயன்படுத்தத் துவங்கினேன். 2007 -இல் இருந்து தான் ஜிமெயில் தன் பீட்டா (beta என்பதற்கு சரியான தமிழ்ப் பதம் என்ன? அறிஞர் பெருமக்கள் எனக்கு உதவலாமே!) அந்தஸ்தில் இருந்து, முழுமை பெற்ற வெளியீடு (release) ஆக மாறியது. 1 GB ஆகத் துவங்கி, தற்போது 10 GB முதல் 400 GB வரை பணம் செலுத்திப் பெறலாம். நீங்கள் இப்பதிவைப் வாசித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் போது ஜிமெயில் பயனர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை 150 மில்லியன் ஆக இருக்கக்கூடும். ஜெர்மனி மற்றும் பிரிட்டனில் ஜிமெயில் கூகிள் மெயில் என்று சொல்லப்படுகிறது. ஏதோ உரிமம் (copyright) குறித்த சர்ச்சை என்று கேள்விப்பட்டேன்.

நிற்க, என் பதிவு, ஜிமெயில் - குறித்து இன்று ஒரு தகவல் - தென்கச்சி சுவாமிநாதன் போல சொல்லிக்கொண்டு போவதல்ல. என் நண்பன் ஒருவன் தன் ஜிமெயில் முகவரி யாரோ இணையத் திருடர்களால் களவாடப்பட்டது என்று சொன்னான். எவ்வளவு முயன்றும் புதிய கடவுச்சொல்லைக் கண்டு பிடிக்க இயலவில்லை என்றும் மாற்று முகவரியும் (secondary email) களவாடப்பட்டது என்றும் சொன்னான். வெகு விரைவில் பலரும் இதுபோல் சொல்லுவார்கள் என்று என்னால் கணிக்க முடிகிறது (Ragavan 's instinct). பெரிய மெனக்கெடல் எதுவும் இல்லாது, சுலபமாய் கண்டுபிடிக்க பல வழிகள் உள்ளன. "கடவுச்சொல்லை மறந்துவிட்டீர்களா?" என்கிற கேள்விக்கு விடை கண்டறிய முயற்சி செய்தால், பலவும் சாத்தியமே. "செல்லப் பெயர், படித்த பள்ளி, கைபேசியின் முதல் ஐந்து இலக்கங்கள், செல்ல நாயின் பெயர்" என்பது போன்ற கேள்விகளுக்கு சரியான பதில்களை orkut மற்றும் myspace போன்ற சமூக வலைதளங்களில் (social networks) நாம் தெளிவாக உளறி வைத்திருக்கும்போது, அவற்றைக் கொண்டு கடவுச்சொல்லை எளிதாக அனுமானம் செய்ய முடியும். தகவல் பாதுகாப்பு எங்கோ தடுமாறுகிறது!

Educational Woes - A much needed debate!

A fortnight ago, one of my friends, sent an URL to me about the worldwide ranking of academic institutions. As a typical Indian, I was searching the top pages to see if any of ours is there and found nothing. Then I found some of our premiere institutions in 500+ positions. I was delighted to see their presence in the list and was not really perturbed about their ranking. I am not clear about where we are lacking. I thought of Jawarhlal Nehru’s famous statement about the role universities in India.

“A university stands for humanism, for tolerance, for reason, for the adventure of ideas and for the search for truth. It stands for the onward march of the human race toward higher objectives. Universities are places of ideals and idealism. If the universities discharge their duties adequately, then, it is well with the nation and the people.”

We have an unlimited talent pool and many scientists have made their mark in the global stage. Despite all this, we have no institution in the top 100. Being at the top of the educational pyramid, universities have a key role in producing quality teachers and researchers for the education, science and technology systems. Are universities effective in building a healthy nation and their contributions noteworthy? These are the questions debated often in Indian academic circles today.

Already the standards of research in the IITs has decreased and situation has worsened, when there was a strong plea made by some NRI benefactors to eliminate postgraduate and research studies as IIT B Techs have more demand in the USA. Manufacturing export-only products! We can’t blame them too. The dichotomies between ‘teaching’ and ‘research’ persist in most IITs to this day, in some form or the other. The misconception that teaching is what the faculty is paid to do and research is one’s own business, has led to all these things, I believe. Increased teaching load may be one of the reasons. I also believe that, faculties with their huge tie-ups with foreign universities have invented a new theory – do research when abroad, teach when back home, as the facilities here are not adequate to do research.

A small country such as Israel, has 6 top-rated universities. If a country that is weakened and semi-destroyed by wars and internal political instability can produce 6 universities, why can’t we? A survey says that 6 million Israel people have bought 12 million books in 2008 and 109 out of 10,000 have published excellent scientific research journals.

Indian teachers are no less talented to their peers abroad, but a congenial and supportive research climate is required for them to get fully involved in research. They need to raise lot of funds too, rather than depending upon the Government and other funding agencies. Collaborative research work with many abroad universities is the key to improve sharing of knowledge and thoughts. This scenario is really conducive for better research work. The focus should be more on qualitative research work which is beyond just imparting classroom education.

I believe that Education, Health Care, Industry and Agriculture are the four pillars of our nation. This cricket crazy nation gives significant importance to movies and entertainment so as to conveniently forget all the four priorities mentioned above. If we would have given half of the importance that we give to movies, theatre, cricket and politics to education, we won’t be like this. Instead of expressing our disbeliefs, we need to act together to do something, better late than never!

Barak Obama and Our Beloved Co-Borns

I was wondering about the reactions of some Americans towards their president, after the first couple spent the evening in Manhattan, enjoying dinner and a show. The people have expressed different opinions about that. They are blaming Barak for spending a day out in drama amidst his busy schedule and an ever growing number of crises. Barak has received varied responses, as few are cursing him for fiddling while the economy burned, and few are congratulating him for striking a balance between personal and official life. Few cried that he has not spent time on looking at the serious issues. And there are other goofs who think that a president should never leave the oval office and work 24/7 — otherwise, he’s not “leading”.

Barak has just done his role as a husband and father and is receiving all criticisms even after doing his level best. This incident reminded me a similar one in our state few years ago. I also read an article which was actually published in Mambalam Times, a weekly in 2006.

When the Chief Minister of a state and the Governor of another state (Indian Minister for External Affairs now!) were watching, a 'cultural' extravaganza with the co-borns who were in full attendance. Most of our political leaders have taken the short-cut from the tinsel town. Except that Mambalam times article and a citation to it by writer Sujatha, no one raised any questions about the commitment of our politicians. Only Kamal Haasan who spoke in the function before Rajni and CM, said that the officials have lot of jobs to do and it’s unfair to make them sit in a function to six and a half hours. For us celluloid is life, breathe and soul, so we tend to ignore such things.

We are not perturbed about anything when most of the speakers in the show went overboard in praise of the newly sworn in chief of the state as well as for the entertainment shows where in half-naked actors (actors is sufficient to mean both sexes) dancing for item numbers. We are Tamilians, for us all these are life and we can’t live without it. Whether it is Chief Minister or Common Man, we all belong to a same fan club!

பிறந்தநாள் வாழ்த்துகள்

திரையுலகில் கமல் தன் தடம் பதித்து ஐம்பது ஆண்டுகள் ஆகின்றன. பால் முகம் மாறாப் பாலகனாய் கமல் களத்தூர் கண்ணம்மாவில் துவங்கி, உன்னைப்போல் ஒருவன் வரை நீண்டுகொண்டிருக்கும் கமலின் திரைப்பயணம் அசாதாரணமானது. குழந்தை நட்சத்திரமாக துவங்கி, நடன இயக்குனராக, திரைக்கதை ஆசிரியராக, பாடகராக, கதநாயகனாக, இயக்குனராக பல்வேறு பரிணாமங்களைக் கொண்டுள்ள கமலை தமிழ் சினிமா மட்டும் சொந்தம் கொண்டாட முடியாது. பரிட்சார்த்த முயற்சிகளும், கடும் உழைப்பும் கமலை பிற நடிகர்களிடமிருந்து தனித்து அடையாளம் காட்டுகின்றன.


நான் பிறந்ததில் இருந்து கமல் அப்படியே இருக்கிறார். நான்தான் முதுமை அடைந்துவிட்டேன். கமல் என்ன படித்தார் என்று யாருக்கும் தெரியாது. ஆனால் அவர் படிக்காதது எதுவுமில்லை என்பது மட்டும் அனைவருக்கும் தெரியும். பிற நடிகர்களை உலகுக்கு தமிழ் சினிமா அடையாளம் காட்டியது. ஆனால் கமல் மட்டுமே தமிழ் சினிமாவை உலகுக்கு அடையாளம் காட்டியவர். பல்வேறு முறை தோல்விகள் கண்ட போதும் கமல் தன் முயற்சிகளை கைவிட்டதில்லை. அம்மா அடித்து அழும் குழந்தைகள், அம்மாவையே கட்டிக் கொண்டு அழுவது போல, மீண்டும் மீண்டும் கமல் சிறந்த உழைப்பைக் கொடுத்தார். கொடுத்துக்கொண்டும் இருப்பார். ரசிகர்கள் விவரம் தெரியாதவர்கள், உங்கள் முயற்சிகளைப் புரிந்து கொள்ளாதவர்கள் என்று பலர் சொன்ன போதும், அதை கமல் மட்டுமே ஆணித்தரமாக மறுத்தார். தாகம் தீராக் கலைஞன் கமல். ஒரு வாழும் வரலாறாக இருந்த போதும், இத்தனை விருதுகளுக்குப் பிறகும், நான் செய்தது ஒன்றும் இல்லை, இன்னும் பல வேலைகள் உள்ளன என்று பணிவு காட்டியது கமல் மட்டுமே. ஒரு ரசிகனாய், சக மனிதனாய் அவரைப் பாராட்டுவது தவிர, வேற என்ன செய்ய முடியும் இந்த பாமர ரசிகனால்.

Google Drive - Is this the cloud?

Low cost Netbooks and high speed internet connectivity has led to phenomenal growth of cloud computing. If Google comes up with its much hyped G-Drive then things will be very interesting. The industry predicts that the arrival of G-Drive might drastically create rate-cuts in the market of external hard disks, compact disks, DVDs and USB flash drives. You can just save all your files and folders in the web’s Gdrive. This universally accessible network enables the users to access our documents from anywhere, anytime and anyhow. With the help of HDTV, you can watch a “Vijay” movie that you have stored in your G-Drive(?!) with internet connectivity and without a computer. High speed Internet makes all these possible.

The following text is an excerpt from the Google’s Analyst day presentation notes:
"With infinite storage, we can house all user files, including: emails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc). We already have efforts in this direction in terms of GDrive, GDS, Lighthouse, but all of them face bandwidth and storage constraints today."

Anyone can use Gdrive – those who trust Google’s policy (“Don’t be evil”). The details say that the GDrive technology spans across different computers, operating systems and devices. I have some questions:

1. Will be it be free of cost?
2. Is this the beginning of the real cloud?
3. Where they are going to insert advertisements?
4. Do they reserve the right to read the files like they do in Gmail?
5. If so, are they evil or not?

The “Free” as in "Free Speech”, not as in “Free Beer”

The software that we use (whether it’s a simple word processing one or a complex web server administration toolkit) has been trapped into an endless battle of proprietary ownership. The proprietary trend started in the early 1970s, and from that time, the users of software are prevented from sharing or modifying software programs. A decade later, proprietary software has started to rule the personal and enterprise computing world and its domination in the market still continues.

Thank God, we have Mr. RMS, our beloved Richard M Stallman, who started the Free Software Foundation (FSF) in 1985. FSF promoted computer user’s rights to use, study, copy, modify and redistribute computer programs and RMS zealously campaigned (and still campaigning!) for breaking the rigid walls created by the proprietary software owners.

My extensive use of open source technologies and my sincere admiration towards copyleft has made me a die-hard fan of RMS. His ideology is quiet simple. Computer users should have the freedom to change and redistribute the software that they use. The “freedom” allow us run, modify and redistribute the software. FSF will help you to do so, and it will be the national agency for the promotion of the use of free software, i.e. software distributed under the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) or other licenses approved by FSF.

I read Stallman’s essay on “Releasing Free Software if You Work at a University” and this blog is a mere inference of that essay. There are certain barriers that prevent us from releasing our software under the GNU GPL license. We need to change our mindset towards our view of looking the software as an opportunity for increasing revenues rather than contributing to knowledge.

I am also aware of the fact that it is a difficult task to change the mindset of the people drastically. The best way to do so is to develop the applications with the help of tools released under the GNU GPL. But from where all these things are going to start? I firmly believe that the academic institutions are the key to do this rather than the corporate companies. The corporate companies are here to increase profit. The institutions are here to promote knowledge and foster research. They should ideally take the torch from the FSF and I believe that they can play the lead role.

As of now, very few academic institutions are supporting the GNU-GPL copyleft license. The University of Texas has a policy by default, releases all software developed by it members as free software under the GNU General Public License. As far as our country is concerned, Indian Institute of Technology in Hyderabad has a policy in favor of releasing software under GPL.

According to Mr. RMS, the Universities have a mission to advance human knowledge and in doing so, they can motivate their faculty and students to leverage the development of free software. It will be well and good. At times the institutions release a software with “free of charge, for academic use only,” which would tell the general public they don’t deserve freedom, and argue that this will obtain the cooperation of academia, which is all (they say) you need.

RMS says that all these are dead-end proposals. He raises a simple question to everyone who is against his policy. “What good is it to make a program powerful and reliable at the expense of users’ freedom?” We need to respect the user’s freedom, and your proprietary licenses will never do so.

I am sure that the FSF is going to play a lead role in creating a new culture and there are good signs already as our esteemed scientist and former Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam has advised the defense scientists to go for open-source software for software security, rather than be stuck with insecure proprietary software. Secure applications are the need of the hour and with the known vulnerabilities, proprietary software can never be the choice of those who build robust applications which are fool-proof. FSF India too, is focusing on taking free software ideas to schools, colleges and teachers.All I can say is, let’s join the momentum and spread the culture to the nook and corners of our country. Lets make a road less traveled as a national highway!

தீபாவளிப் பதிவுகள்

தீபாவளி அன்று எழுதுவதால் தீபாவளி குறித்தே எழுதுகிறேன். தெருவெங்கும் வெடிக் காகிதங்கள் சிதறிக்கிடக்கும் இந்த தீபாவளி சில புதிய சிந்தனைகளைத் கிளறி விடுகிறது. சிறுவனாய் இருந்தபோது கிட்டிய இன்பமோ குதுகலமோ குறைந்திருக்கிறது. வளர வளர உள்ளுக்குள் இருக்கும் குழந்தையை தொலைத்து விடுகிறோமா அல்லது குழந்தைப் பருவத்தின் தீபாவளி உற்சாகம் வெறும் மாயையா என்பது தெரியவில்லை.

நேற்று இரவு வரை புதிய ஆடை வாங்க வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் சிறிதும் இல்லை. புதிய ஆடை உடுத்தவேண்டும் என்கிற சம்ப்ரதாயம் குறித்து வீட்டிலுள்ளோர் அதிகம் வற்புறுத்தவே, அவர்கள் எண்ணத்தின் பொருட்டு, ஆடை ஒன்று வாங்கிவந்தேன். மிக மெதுவாகவே எழுந்து, வாழ்த்த வேண்டியவர்களை வாழ்த்தி, வணங்க வேண்டியவர்களை வணங்கியதில் பாதி நாள் போய்விட்டது.

அதன் பின் வாழ்வின் முக்கிய தருணங்கள் எல்லாம் தொலைக்காட்சியால் ஆக்ரமிக்கப்படுகிறது. என்ன செய்வது என்பது தெரியாமல் எல்லாரும் அதன் முன் உட்கார்ந்திருக்கிறோம். அடுத்தவன் அனுப்பிய குறுஞ்செய்திகளை எல்லாம் தீபாவளி வாழ்த்து என்கிற பெயரில் பார்வர்ட் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கும் தமிழ்ச் சமூகத்திற்கு அண்டை வீட்டில் பல ஆண்டுகளாக் குடி இருப்பவனின் பெயர் தெரியாவிட்டாலும், உலகத் தொலைக்காட்சிகளில் முதன் முறையாக என்ன திரைப்படம் என்பது தெரிந்து இருக்கிறது. புதிய ஆடை உடுத்தி, தான் விரும்பிய பெண்ணிடம் அதை காட்ட வேண்டும் என்று அவள் வீடிருக்கும் தெருவில் அலைந்து கொண்டிருந்த என் நண்பனின் நினைவு வந்தது. அவன் காதலியோ அவன் இருக்கும் தெருவில் அவனைத்தேடி அலைந்து கொண்டிருந்தாள். இலக்கியக் காதல் இதுவல்லவோ என்று அவனை நங்கள் பகடி செய்து கொண்டிருந்தோம். பொய்க்கோபமும் சந்தோஷமுமாக அதை அவன் எற்றுக்கொண்டிருந்தான். வாழ்வின் நிச்சியமற்ற தன்மை எல்லோரையும் ஆளுக்கொருப்பக்கம் அலைக்கழித்தாலும், உள்ளார்ந்த அன்பு இன்றும் இருப்பதால் உலகம் இயங்குகிறது.

முன்பெல்லாம் வெடி வெடிப்பதில் இருந்த ஆர்வம், "வெடியாபீஸ்" என்கிற வெடி தொழிற்சாலைகளின் குழந்தை தொழிலாளர்களின் நிலை கண்ட பின் வடிந்து விட்டிருக்கிறது. காலை எட்டு மணியில் இருந்து மாலை ஐந்து மணி வரை அயராது வெடி சுற்றும் மனிதனை எந்திரமாகும் (dehumanizing) தொழிற்சாலைகளும், பள்ளிக் கல்வியை அடியோடு தொலைத்து விட்ட நம் இளைய தலைமுறையும் விவரிக்க இயலாத வேதனையை ஏற்படுத்துகின்றன. வயதாகிவிட்டதால் வெடி வெடிக்க பயம் உனக்கு என்கிற வீட்டோரின் குற்றச்சாட்டு சிரிப்பையும் வருத்தத்தையும் சேர்ந்தே உண்டாக்கியது. குடிசைகள் பற்றிய கவலை இன்றி விண்ணில் செலுத்தப்படும் வெடிகள் பயத்தை உண்டாக்கின. வழக்கமாக தீபாவளிக்கு சில நாட்கள் முன்பு வரை மழை இருப்பதால் குடிசைகள் சற்று ஈரப்பதமுடன் இருக்கும். வெடிகள் ஏற்படுத்தும் இழப்புகள் குறைவே. இம்முறை சிறிதும் மழை இல்லாததால் என்ன ஆகுமோ என அச்சம் உண்டாகியது. தெருவெங்கும் வெடித்து, வான் வெளி எங்கும் புகை கக்கும் இப்பண்டிகை என் போன்ற விவசாய கிராமம் சார்ந்த மனிதனை அந்நியமாக்குகிறது. சுற்றுச்சுழல் அமைப்புகள் பெரும் கூச்சலிட்டும் எவருக்கும் சூழல் மாசு குறித்தோ, ஓசை மாசுபாடு பற்றியோ சிறிதும் அக்கறை இல்லை என்பது வெட்கம் கொள்ளச்செய்கிறது.

ஜவுளி, போக்குவரத்து, சிறு வணிகம் மற்றும் சிவகாசியை சேர்ந்த சிறுதொழில் முனைவோரின் வாழ்வியல் வளம் பெறும் என்பதால் மட்டுமே தீபாவளியை ஒரு தொழிற்சங்க ஆதரவாளனாக என்னால் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடிகிறது.

ஸ்ரீரங்கம் நாட்கள்

வெகு நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு ஸ்ரீரங்கம் தெருக்களில் சுற்றி அலைந்து கொண்டிருந்தேன். சித்திரை, உத்திர, அடையவளஞ்சான் வீதிகளுக்கும் எனக்கும் நடுவே ஒரு மாயவலை பின்னப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. நான் பார்த்த, அவதானித்த ஸ்ரீரங்கம் நிறைய மாறி இருக்கிறது. நவராத்திரி நாட்களின் உற்சாகமும் குதூகலமும் குறைந்திருக்கிறது. எப்போதும் போல் தாயார் சன்னதிக்கும், மேட்டு அழகிய சிங்கர் சன்னதிக்கும் சென்று வந்தேன். மெல்லிய வோட்கா வாசனையுடன் பட்டர் தக்ஷிணை கேட்டு நச்சரித்தார். தற்போது அமெரிக்காவிலிருக்கும் என் நண்பன் வரதனுடன் கல்லூரி நாட்களில் ஓவ்வொரு சன்னதியாக பார்த்துவிட்டு ஆயிரம் கால் மண்டபத்தின் எதிர்புறம் உள்ள மணல் வெளியில் மடைப்பள்ளி பிரசாத்துடன் நிலவொளியில் பேசிக்கொண்டு இருந்தது நினைவுக்கு வந்து ஞாபகக் கிளர்ச்சியை உண்டு பண்ணியது. நிலா இன்றும் தன் கிரணங்களை வருவோர் போவோர் மீது வீசிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. எதாவது ஒரு தெருவில் நின்று, ஸ்ரீனிவாசா, வரதராஜா, ரங்கராஜா என்று குரல் கொடுத்தால், நேற்று பிறந்த குழந்தையில் இருந்து, நாளை சாகப்போகிற கிழம் வரை ஏகப்பட்டவர்கள் வந்து, ஏனப்பா அழைத்தாய் என்று பிலுபிலுவென்று பிடித்துக் கொள்வார்கள்.

இறைவனால் ஆசிர்வதிக்கப்பட்ட ஊர் என்பதால் தேவதைகளுக்கு பஞ்சமே இருக்காது. பெரும்பாலும் சீதாலக்ஷ்மி ராமசுவாமி அல்லது காவேரி கல்லூரிகளில் சேர்ந்து படிக்கிற நேரம் போக மற்ற நேரங்களில் கண்ணில் படும் வாலிப வயோதிகர்களை அழகால் வதைக்கிறவர்கள். உயரம், தோற்றம், நிறம் , குணம், அங்க லாவண்யம் எதிலும் பழுது சொல்ல முடியாதபடி, தான் அழகாக இருக்கிறோம் என்கிற அகங்காரமோ, பிரக்ஞயோ இல்லாதிருப்பர்கள். நவராத்திரியின் மாலை வேளைகளில் பட்டுப் பாவாடையுடன் அக்கம் பக்க வீடுகளுக்குப் போய் ஸ்வரம் போட்டு சோபில்லு அல்லது கிருஷ்ணா நீ பேஅகனே பாடி விட்டு சுண்டல் சேகரிப்பர். எதாவது ஒரு தெரு முக்கு வீட்டின் திண்ணையில் உக்காந்து சுண்டலை ஸ்வாகா பண்ணி விட்டு அரட்டை அடிக்கும் காட்சிகளை இப்போதெல்லாம் காண முடிவதில்லை.

Google's Android

Android is the first free, open source, and fully customizable mobile platform. Android offers a full stack: an operating system, middleware, and key mobile applications. It also contains a rich set of APIs that allows third-party developers to develop great applications. Instead of a device or vendor dependent mobile operating system, Android is released as a platform independent mobile OS. For example, the mobile manufacturer Nokia supports Symbian and companies such as Asus and O2 supports Windows Mobile. The global competition for these operating systems become more vigorous when Apple Introduced their Iphone OS 3.0 in association with AT and T. All of these mobile operating systems support touch control, rudimentary multi-tasking, rich media, desktop-like Web browsing, and advanced messaging services. The one that stands-out in this list is Android. The Android OS is device independent open source project funded, supported and promoted by Google. (visit: http://www.android.com/).

With devices built on the Android Platform, users are able to fully tailor the phone to their interests. They can swap out the phone's homescreen, the style of the dialer, or any of the applications. They can even instruct their phones to use their favorite photo viewing application to handle the viewing of all photos.

Me, Myself and My Mobile Phone……

This blog is about my experiences and views about my mobile phone. It travels with me wherever I go. To temples, to hospitals, to places where silence matters more, to mortuary, to graveyard, and so on… even to places where there is no network coverage.

Basically I am a tech junkie who tries to use any technology that has reached the market, but technological advancements in mobile phones have never been my cup of tea. To me they are communicating devices and that’s all. I don’t even know the model numbers and when someone asked my about the features of the mobile phone which I had then, I just blinked and he starred at me like seeing an uninvited guest in someone else’s party.

My Operations with my mobile phone are very limited, I make a call, I attend a call, I store numbers in phone book, change the mode to silent in situations that demands it and activate the alarm every day before going to bed. I neither send nor forward messages. But I read them.

I lost my cell phone one day. I was panic as if Obama is waiting to make a call to me and to discuss about the Iraq war. My mind populated the following questions: How many calls will I get? Who are the probable callers? What will they think if nobody is picking it up? Who will find it out? If it goes to the hands of a malicious person, what he will do? Where I will be if he does something illegal with it? And so on……. All of sudden one of my colleagues found that in a bush near Tamil Department. Thank God! My invaluable asset is back.

Five six years before, when I leave the home in the morning, my mom reminds me to take my lunch bag and nowadays she reminds me to take my mobile phone. Have they become the sixth finger in everyone’s hands? Of course it helps me a lot when I call her to say “I am not going to come home today for dinner”, but do they play such a pivotal role in our life? For many their cell phone numbers have become their surname. If Kambar is alive now, he would have wrote, “அண்ணலும் நோக்கியா, அவளும் நோக்கியா”.

I saw a girl in train one day with new mobile phone. That phone I think is her task master and it gave many instructions to her. She was fiddling with the settings and configuration. She was “testing” the built in ringtones and few downloaded ones. One old woman who sat near her was already ill and got irritated. I was in some sort of confusion then. Who is ill?

I receive phone calls from my network operator about caller tunes at awkward situations. One day I received a similar call when I was waiting outside the mortuary to collect my friend’s brother’s body. I thought of breaking my mobile into pieces. When I was performing the 10th day rituals to my aunt with deep pain in the heart which I can’t describe in words, I received a call from a bank and the girl who spoke at the other end said that I am one of the luckiest customer of that month and they were keen to offer a loan with reduced interest if I need one.

In January 2005, on what was presumably a slow weekend for news, The Observer newspaper delivered its readers an astonishing scoop. Mobile phones, it announced, were responsible for the decline of the bird’s population. They are also creating adverse effects to health and in Chennai, many people who died in electric train accidents were hit when they were using their mobile phone.

Leave them apart; these phones have made many Harichandrans as Liars. If James Bond is licensed to Kill, you are licensed to Lie if you have a cell phone. Had Harichandra been alive now and has a mobile phone, It would be interesting to see if he can be as “True” as described in the stories. Instead of testing him with various cumbersome circumstances, "Vishwamithara" should make him a sales manger in an FMCG firm or Banking and Financial Domain. Being a person who is responsible for sales and with a mobile phone, I wonder can he escape without saying a lie?

With the advent of technology, communications has been faster, easier and simple. They have made life easy and mobile phones are definitely helping the rural people during crisis. Technology is a double edged weapon and hence cyber crimes too are increasing like anything. Camera mobiles have invaded into everyone’s privacy and many doesn’t find exchanging pornographic stuff as a criminal thing.

Despite all these unconstructive things, I still keep a mobile phone and I will, just for a call on Sunday afternoons from my niece who shouts “Hi Chittappu!”. Such wonderful moments makes me forget all the issues I have narrated so far and my life too goes on with mobile phones as an indispensable entity to it.

பெருமாள் கோவிலும் சிறுவர் குழாமும்!

பெருமாள் கோவில் உத்சவத்தில் கலந்துகொண்டு முதல் மரியாதையை பெறச் சென்றிருந்தேன். தீபாராதனைக்கு முன்னர் திரை சார்த்தி இருந்தது. அனைவரும் பயபக்தியோடு தீபாராதனைக்கு காத்திருந்தனர். திரைக்கு முன்னால் ஒரு சிறுவர் குழாம் நின்று கொண்டு இருந்தது ( நான்கு அல்லது ஐந்து சிறுவர்கள்). சிறுவர்கள் குழாம் ஏற்படுத்திய சத்தத்தில் பலரது கவனம் கலைந்தது. சிறுவர்கள் அனைவரும் ஒரு விதமான மகிழ்சியில் இருந்தனர். ஒரு பையனால் சிரிப்பை அடக்க முடியவில்லை. எதயோ நினைத்து நினைத்து சிரித்துக் கொண்டு இருந்தான். அவனது சிரிப்பு வயது வித்யாசமின்றி அனைவரயும் ஒரு நோய் போலத் தொற்றிக்கொண்டு இருந்தது. பலர் சிரிப்பை மறைக்க முயற்சி செய்து கொண்டு இருந்தனர். சிலர் சிரிப்பது ஒரு குற்றம் போல சிரிப்பை அடக்கி முகத்தை இறுக்கமாக வைத்துக்கொண்டு இருந்தனர். உள்ளே இருந்த ஸ்ரீ வைஷ்ணவர்க்கும் சிரிப்பு வந்துவிட்டது. பெருமாளுக்கும் சிரிப்பு வந்திருக்கலாம். திரையிட்டு இருந்ததால் பார்க்க முடியவில்லை, எனக்கு ஞானக்கண்ணும் இல்லை.

நம்மில் பெரும்பாலோர்க்கு கடவுள் தண்டனை தரும் காவலனாகவோ, நாம் தேவைகளை நிறைவேற்றவந்த தேவதூதன் போலோ தோற்றமளிக்கிறார். குழந்தைகளால் மட்டுமே கடவுளோடு பேசவும் நட்பு பாராட்டவும் முடிகிறது. ஒரு இறுக்கமான சுழலைக்கூட எளியதாக, இயல்பான ஒன்றாக மாற்றும் திறன் குழந்தைகளுக்கே உரியது என்பதும், மனிதன் வளர வளர தான் கொண்டு வந்த நகைச்சுவை உணர்வையும் தனக்குள்ளே இருக்கும் குழந்தைதனத்தையும் தொலைத்து விடுகிறான் என்பது தெரிய வந்தது. வீட்டிற்கு வந்த பின்னும், தொடர்ந்து அந்த நிகழ்வு என்னை துரத்திக்கொண்டு இருந்தது.

எப்பொழுதோ பார்த்த "வித்யார்த்திகளே, இதிலே இதிலே" என்ற மலையாளத் திரைப்படம் நினைவுக்கு வந்தது. அப்படத்தில் ஒரு காட்சியில் பல்வேறு மதங்களைச் சார்ந்த சிறுவர்கள் விளையாடும் போது பந்து சுவரில் உள்ள ஓர் விநாயகர் சிலையை உடைத்து விடும். சிறுவர்கள் கூடிப்பேசி தாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் சேமித்து வைத்துள்ள பணத்தை எடுத்து ஓர் புதிய சிலையை அங்கே வைத்து விடுவர். மறுபடியும் ஒரு முறை பந்து சிலையை உடைத்து விட, மறுபடியும் சிறுவர்கள் தங்கள் பணத்தைகொண்டு புதிய சிலை வாங்குவர். வோர்ட்ஸ்வொர்த் சொன்ன "Child is the father of the Man" வரி நூறு சதவீதம் உண்மை என்று புலனாகியது. இதே நிகழ்வு பெரியவர்கள் மத்தியில் நடந்திருந்தால் குறைந்தது ஒரு சிறிய கலவரமாவது நிகழ்ந்திருக்கும். சிறுவர்களின் உலகம் அன்பாலும் நட்பாலும் நிறைந்திருக்கிறது. அதை வளர்த்தெடுக்கவேண்டிய மனிதன், மாறாக அவன் மனதில் வன்மம் வளரச் செய்கிறான். “நான் ஒரு எறும்பைக் கொல்கிறேன், என் பிள்ளைகள் அதைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறார்கள்” என்ற கவிதை நினைவுக்கு வந்தது.

பெருநகரங்களில் வாழும் சிறுவர்களின் நிலை பரிதாபத்திற்குரியதாக இருக்கிறது. விடுமுறை நாட்களில் கூட அவர்களால் அவர்களின் விருப்பத்திற்கேற்ப இயங்க முடிவதில்லை. “ஊருக்கு போகலியா திருவிழாவுக்கு, தாத்தா பாட்டி எல்லாம் போயி பார்க்கலியா?” என்று கேட்டதற்கு ஒரு பையன் "அபாகஸ் கிளாஸ் போகணும் அங்கிள்" என்று சொன்னான். என் நண்பர் ஒருவரின் மகன் வெவ்வேறு நாடுகளின் தலைநகரங்களின் பெயர்களும், அந்நாடுகளின் நாணயங்களையும், வான் மற்றும் கப்பல் வழிகளையும் நொடியில் சொல்லிவிடுவான். ஆனால் பக்கத்து வீட்டில் இருக்கும் நண்பனின் பெயரை யோசித்தே சொல்ல முடிக்கிறது அவனால். யாரோ எழுதிய ஒரு கவிதை நினைவுக்கு வந்தது அவனைப் பார்க்கும் போது, "குழந்தை அறிவுஜீவியைபோல் பேசுகிறான் என்று மகிழ்ச்சியடைகிறாள் மனைவி, குழந்தை குழந்தையாக இல்லயே என்று கவலை கொள்கிறான் கணவன்".

கல்வி பெரிதும் வணிகமாகியுள்ள சூழலில் மாற்றுகல்வி முறைகளும் பயிற்றுவித்தல்களும் அதிகம் முக்கியத்துவம் பெறுகின்றன. திறமைகளை நிரம்ப வளர்த்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டியது அவசியம் தான் என்ற போதும், வெறும் கணக்குகளும், பயிற்சிகளும் தாண்டி, வாழ்வையும் மனிதர்களையும் அவர்களின் இயல்பையும் புரிந்து கொள்ள அவர்களை தயார்படுத்த வேண்டும்.

ஒரு புறம் நகரத்து சிறார்களின் வாழ்கை இவ்வாறு உள்ள நிலையில், பள்ளிக்கல்வி என்பதே எட்டாக்கனியாய் இருக்கிறது சில சிறார்களுக்கு. உலகம் முழுவதிலும் உள்ள நாடுகளில், முதியோர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை உயர்ந்துகொண்டே இருக்கையில், இந்தியாவில் மட்டுமே இளைஞர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை கூடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. ஆனால், மொத்த தேசிய வருமானத்தில் 3.5 சதவீதம் மட்டுமே இந்தியா கல்விக்காக செலவிடுகிறது. (சீனா மொத்தம் 8 சதவிகிதம்). அரசு நடத்தும் ஓரு மில்லியன் பள்ளிகளில், பெரும்பாலானவை தரம் குறைந்தவையாக இருக்கின்றன. மாணவர் சேர்க்கையும் நாளுக்கு நாள் குறைகிறது. தனியார் பள்ளிகள் வணிகமயமாக்கப்பட்ட சுழலில், கல்வி ஓர் சாமானியனுக்கு அரிதாகவே ஆகிவிடுகிறது. சீருடை, புத்தகம், பள்ளி வாகனம், காலணிகள் என அனைத்தும் தாங்களே தரும் இப்பள்ளிகள், கல்வியை மட்டும் "அதெல்லாம் நாங்க சொல்லிதர மாட்டோம், வெளியில் தனியா டியூஷன் ஏற்பாடு பண்ணிக்கங்க" என்று சொல்லுவது விசித்தரமாக இருக்கிறது.

கண்டம் விட்டு கண்டம் பாயும் ஏவுகணை ஒன்றைத் தயாரிக்க ஆகும் செலவில், மூன்று லட்சம் ஆரம்ப பள்ளிகளை கட்ட முடியும் என்று சொல்கிறது ஓரு புள்ளி விவரம். மாணவர் சேர்க்கையை அதிகரிக்கவும் , பள்ளியை விட்டு விலகுவோரின் எண்ணிக்கையை குறைக்கவும் அரசாங்கம் பெரும் முயற்சிகளை மேற்கொண்டு வரும் போதிலும், பெரிய மாற்றம் ஒன்றும் ஏற்படவில்லை. "குட்டி" திரைப்படம் ஏற்படுத்திய வலி இன்னமும் இருக்கிறது. இசைஞானியின் குரலில், "எங்கே போறே தங்கச்சி" பாடலைக் கேட்கும் போதெல்லாம் இனம் புரியாத வேதனை ஆட்கொள்கிறது. சுஜாதாவின் கவிதை ஒன்று நினைவுக்கு வந்தது. அவர் சொல்லியுள்ள வரிகளோடு, "உன் நிலை குறித்து வலைப்பதிவு ஒன்றும் எழுதுவோம்" என்று சேர்த்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள்.

Inclusion of Web 2.0 – From a Tamilian’s Perspective

I am pleased to write about web 2.0. It has become the millionth English word. British News papers have described this as 'disappointingly geeky' term. Anyhow, the word has entered into the English lexicon. Global Language Monitor finds new words and adds them to the lexicon. The word “Web 2.0” competed with “Financial Tsunami” and Emerged as the millionth word based on the number of appearances in the print media. English has absorbed as many as foreign words as possible and the recent one being, “Jai ho”.

With English language gaining new word every 98 minutes and the abnormal growth of lexicon has made life tough for the researchers in the natural language processing domain. Apart from “Web 2.0”, there are many other jargons too are added to the lexicon such as 'cloud computing', 'carbon neutral', and 'sexting' - the sending of suggestive messages and pictures by SMS. These growing lexicons have overtaken the words contributed by “William Shakespeare”.

Every Language has acquired as many as words as possible from other languages and Tamil too is not an exception for this phenomenon. Few years ago, the versatile actor Kamal Haasan quipped that words “Bus” and “Kiss” have become a part of Tamil Lexicon and people can’t avoid using words such as these. Tholkappiyam (A great Tamil literature - If you think about that serial actor, I am not responsible for that and you have a disease that’s almost incurable) says that “எல்லா சொல்லும் பொருள் குறித்தனவே” which means all Tamil words are based on its meaning and there’s nothing wrong in embracing words from other languages.

To Bing or Not to…………..

One of my old students called me few days before and asked me about my views on “Bing”. Initially I was not able to understand what he was speaking about. He has a misconception that I get frequent updates on emerging technologies and standards. I asked him what that “Bing” actually means. Most of the teachers learn from their students, and I am no exception to this.

The much hyped Bing is out and people have started comparing it with google. Google has become a benchmark while talking about search engines! We can’t ignore this search giant. The effectiveness and functionality of any search engine can be analyzed only be matching it with Google. With the new “Bing” and its old “Live”, what’s the position of Microsoft as far as search engine market is concerned?

The comparisons are quite interesting to read and all of them are addressing issues such as the interface and quality of the results. The focus of contemporary Web information retrieval systems has been to provide efficient support for the querying and retrieval of relevant documents.

As far as relevance is concerned, I have had some interesting experiences when I used Google. I tried to know about my favorite actor “Asin” few years ago (she had no website then and was not so popular too), I got very interesting results. Some of them were official web sites of some movies she acted/acting and many were mathematical web sites with formulas such as asin(x) (complementary function of sin(x)), acos(x)… kind. My friend had a similar experience while using the search term “Anna” (Aringar Anna) and found many websites related to Anna University and Anna Kournikova.

Just as the ranking of documents is a critical component of today's search engines, the ranking of complex relationships will be an important component in tomorrows analytical search engines. Analyzing the keywords without understating their meaning is an age old technique and Google too has moved to semantic searches. Google executives over the years have acknowledged that semantic search technology will be an important component of search engines in the future. All of a sudden you can’t make a smart search engine and the process is quite tough as the underlying html docs are also to be enhanced with Meta data. I came to know that Google’s Innovation labs are doing plenty of research in making it “Semantic-Google” and in January of this year, during Google's fourth-quarter earnings conference call, CEO Eric Schmidt touched briefly on this topic, hinting that the company is getting more serious about semantic search technology.

Will Bing be just a mere search engine to compete with the likes of Google and Yahoo or is it going to address any of the complexities of Information Retrieval? I don’t know whether Bing is just an enhancement of “Live” or with their acquisitions such as Powerset and FAST, they too are in the process of enriching the user’s search experience with more meaningful results.

In terms of User Interface, the best one as far as I am concerned is “Cuil”. There's another one called "Blackle", an energy saving search engine developed to promote the green computing movement.
There are several search engines that are much better than Google if we are very much particular about the ranking and relevance. Try WolframAlpha, a systematic knowledge “computational” search engine, if you want real results to your queries rather than wadding through pages and pages of “possible” and “similar” answers of Google. WolframAlpha is not a conventional search engine. It uses Knowledge models to bring you the right answer. I think WolframAlpha and Google can co-exist and offer different search flavors. Only this May it became live and I suggest the readers of this blog too have a try at it.

உடல்நிலை சரியில்லாததால் சில நாட்கள் அலுவலகம் செல்லாமலிருந்தேன். பணிக்கு திரும்பியவுடன் என் மின்னஞ்சல் முகவரிக்கு ஏதேனும் கடிதங்கள் வந்துள்ளனவா என்று பார்க்க செய்திப்பெட்டியை திறந்து பார்த்தேன். மூன்று நாட்களாக எந்த புதிய மின்னஞ்சல்களும் வரவில்லை. இந்த பிரபஞ்சத்தில் எந்த ஒரு ஜீவராசிக்கும் மூன்று நாட்களாக என் குறித்த எண்ணம் வரவில்லை என்ற நினைப்பே தொண்டையில் வலி உண்டாக்கியது. சிறிது நேரம் கழிந்த பின்பே இதனால் ஒன்றும் ஆகிவிடப்போவதில்லை என்ற தெளிவு பிறந்தது. இணயம் ஏன் இவ்வளவு தூரம் என்னை அடிமையாக ஆக்கிவிடுகிறது என்று யோசித்தேன். அலைபேசிகளும் இணையமும் ஏன் இன்று வாழ்கையின் தவிர்க்க முடியாதனவாக மாறிவிட்டன என்று எண்ணும் போது வியப்பாக இருந்தது. இணயம் தன் மாயப் புல்லாங்குழலை எந்நேரமும் இசைத்துக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறது. பேக்பைப்பர் பின்னால் செல்லும் எலிகளை போல நான் இணயத்தின் பின்னால் ஓடுகிறேன். அந்த மயக்கம் விசித்திரமானது. தன்னுடைய கம்பீரம் மறந்து தெருவில் யாசகம் கேட்கும் கோவில்யானை போல என்னை இணயம் மாற்றி இருக்கிறது என்பதே நிஜம்.
